5 essential hints to train your dog to walk on a leash

Jon29 April 202322 May 2023

Walking your dog on a leash is an essential part of being a responsible dog owner. It allows your dog to exercise, explore their surroundings, and bond with you.

However, teaching your dog to walk on a leash can be a challenge, especially if they are used to running free. In this article, we will provide tips and tricks for teaching your dog to walk on a leash and recommend two leashes and two harnesses that can make the training process easier.

Start with short walks

When teaching your dog to walk on a leash, it’s important to start with short walks. This will help your dog get used to the leash and the feeling of being restrained. Start with walks around your yard or a quiet, low-traffic area. Gradually increase the distance and duration of your walks as your dog becomes more comfortable.

Use positive reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is the most effective way to train your dog to walk on a leash. Reward your dog with treats, praise, and affection when they walk calmly on the leash. Use a clicker to mark good behavior and reinforce it with a treat. Avoid punishing your dog for bad behavior, as this can lead to fear and anxiety.

Correct bad behavior

If your dog pulls or lunges on the leash, gently correct them with a quick tug on the leash. Use a firm but gentle tone to discourage bad behavior. You can also stop walking and wait for your dog to calm down before continuing. Be consistent with your corrections and avoid using force.

Choose the right leash and harness

Choosing the right leash and harness can make a big difference in the training process. We recommend the following:

  • The PetSafe Easy Walk Harness: This harness gently discourages your dog from pulling by redirecting their attention to the side. It’s easy to fit and adjust and is available on Amazon.
  • The Ruffwear Front Range Leash: This leash is lightweight and durable, with a padded handle for comfort. (“Ruffwear Front Range Leash – Hike & Camp”) It’s great for training and everyday use and is available on Amazon.
  • The Blue-9 Balance Harness: This harness has adjustable straps for a custom fit and a front D-ring for training purposes. It’s made with high-quality materials and is available on Amazon.
  • The TUG Patented 360° Tangle-Free, Heavy Duty Retractable Dog Leash: This leash is strong and durable with a tangle-free design that prevents knots and twists. It’s also available on Amazon.

Be patient and consistent

Teaching your dog to walk on a leash takes time and patience. Be consistent with your training and avoid getting frustrated if your dog doesn’t learn right away. Celebrate small successes and continue to work with your dog until they become comfortable walking on a leash.

Teaching your dog to walk on a leash is an important part of being a responsible dog owner. By starting with short walks, using positive reinforcement, correcting bad behavior, choosing the right leash and harness, and being patient and consistent, you can train your dog to walk on a leash in no time.

Enjoy every second, the bond you build walking your dog will last forever. And keep returning to Dogwalkingproducts.com for tips, help, advice and all the best products for you and your dog!
